Factur-X 2026: The 5 mistakes most artisans make

    5 min read·By Alexandre Renda·April 30, 2026

The Factur-X reform arrives on September 1, 2026. Yet, most artisans are still making the same mistakes that will cost them dearly. Not because they don't care — but because no one has clearly explained to them what will really change. We're doing it now.

Mistake n°1 — Believing that PDF sent by email is sufficient

This is the number one mistake. And it affects almost all artisans who still invoice on Word, Excel, or even a basic application.

A PDF sent by email, even with all the correct information inside, will no longer be considered a compliant invoice for your professional clients starting from September 1, 2027.

What the law requires is a structured format — Factur-X — which combines a PDF readable by your client and integrated XML data automatically readable by the tax administration. And this file must pass through an approved platform, not your email inbox.

⚠️ Continuing to send PDFs by email to your professional clients after September 1, 2027 = €15 excl. VAT per non-compliant invoice, up to a limit of €15,000 excl. VAT per year.

Mistake n°2 — Waiting until September 2026 to prepare

Many artisans tell themselves that September 1, 2026 is still far away. Except that it's in a few months — and that's the date from which you must be able to receive electronic invoices from your suppliers.

If you haven't chosen your solution before this date, your suppliers can no longer send you their invoices correctly. Which means no more material orders, no more subcontractor payments, no more normal activity.

📅 Experts recommend being operational before June 2026 to have time to test. You have less time than it seems.

    Mistake n°3 — Confusing e-invoicing and e-reporting

This is the most frequent technical confusion — and it has very concrete consequences.

    Card 1
    E-invoicing

Sending and receiving electronic invoices between professionals via an approved platform. Concerns all B2B transactions.

    Card 2
    E-reporting

Transmission of transaction data to the tax administration. Also concerns transactions with individuals.

These are two distinct obligations with two consecutive timelines. Many artisans think they are compliant because they have settled the e-invoicing part — and discover too late that they are missing e-reporting. Check that the solution you choose handles both.

Mistake n°4 — Forgetting the new mandatory mentions

From September 1, 2026, four new mentions become mandatory on all your invoices.

    • The category of the operation (sale, service provision, or both)
    • The option for VAT payment on debits if applicable
    • The full delivery address of the goods if different from the client's address
    • The SIREN number of your professional client

To these four new mentions are added all the already mandatory mentions. Result: €15 excl. VAT fine per non-compliant invoice. For a self-employed person who issues many invoices, the penalty quickly reaches the cap of €15,000 excl. VAT per year.

⚠️ €15 excl. VAT per non-compliant invoice · cap €15,000 excl. VAT per year · first infraction exempt if compliant within 30 days.

Mistake n°5 — Choosing the wrong software

Not all invoicing software is Factur-X compatible. Software that generates classic PDFs, even if it's fast and convenient, will not make you compliant with the reform.

What to check when choosing software:

    • Generates the Factur-X format (PDF + XML) natively
    • Connects to an approved platform
    • Manages e-reporting automatically
    • Archives your invoices for 10 years

If one of these boxes is not checked, the software is not sufficient.
