Factur-X 2026: what changes for artisans on September 1st
You've heard about Factur-X but you're not really sure what it changes for you? You're not alone. Nearly one in four artisans has done nothing yet to prepare. The problem is that the first deadline is approaching on September 1, 2026 — and the penalties are real. We explain everything, simply.
What exactly is Factur-X?
Factur-X is the new mandatory format for all professional invoices in France. No more PDFs sent by email — your invoices will now have to go through an official platform approved by the State.
Concretely, a Factur-X is a hybrid file: a normal PDF that your client can read, with structured XML data integrated within that the tax administration can read automatically.
No need to understand the technical part. What matters is to use artisan invoicing software that does it for you automatically.
The two dates every artisan must know
The reform takes place in two stages. You have time to organize yourself — but you need to act now.
Obligation to receive electronic invoices. If one of your suppliers sends you an invoice in electronic format, you must be able to receive it via an approved platform. If you are not ready, your supplier simply cannot invoice you correctly anymore.
Obligation to issue your invoices in electronic format. All your invoices sent to professional clients must go through an approved platform. PDFs sent by email for B2B are over.
Are you really concerned?
Yes. Even if you are under VAT exemption. Even if you are a micro-entrepreneur. Even if you work mainly with individuals.
The reform applies to all professionals subject to VAT established in France — and that includes those under VAT exemption who do not charge it but remain subject to it.
The only real exception concerns invoices sent directly to individuals. But you will still have the obligation to transmit certain data to the administration via e-reporting.
In short: everyone is concerned in one way or another.
What happens if you do nothing
The penalties are clear and they hurt.
€15 excl. VAT per non-compliant invoice, up to a limit of €15,000 excl. VAT per year. For a missing e-reporting transmission, the fine is €250 excl. VAT, with the same annual cap. The first infraction is exempt if you become compliant within 30 days.
Not to mention the practical complications: your suppliers will no longer be able to send you their invoices correctly, which can block your projects and your accounting.
⚠️ €15 excl. VAT per non-compliant invoice · €250 excl. VAT per missing e-reporting transmission · cap €15,000 excl. VAT per year · first infraction exempt if compliant within 30 days
What changes daily on the job site
Concretely for a plumber, electrician, painter or mason, here's what changes:
- •You can no longer send a simple PDF by email to your professional clients
- •Your invoices must contain 4 new mandatory mentions
- •They must go through an approved platform
- •They must be archived for 10 years
What doesn't change: you continue to create your quotes and invoices as before. The difference is the format in which they are generated and how they are transmitted.
The good news: with the right software, you don't have to do anything
If you use Factur-X compatible quote and invoicing software, you have absolutely nothing to change in your way of working. The software automatically generates the correct format, transmits the data to the right platforms, and archives everything for 10 years.
Quickote génère vos factures au format Factur-X. Le raccordement à une Plateforme Agréée, nécessaire à l'émission obligatoire de septembre 2027, est en cours de finalisation.
